Title: English teacher

Fred Stiglingh has18 years’ experience as teacher, language manager, and course leader, with a former career in journalism, advertising, televisionproduction, and corporate writing. He has English Literature, Economic History and Psychology qualifications from Rhodes University and University of Cape Town; a University of Cambridge CELTA, andIELTS Certification(ESOL Examinations). He presently teaches two elective English courses at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (School of Marxism). Fred believes teaching has to lead to effective learning by helping to create the conditions in which students might be able to learn. The teacher should listen and respond to students, involve them, enable them to work at their own speed, not give long explanations, encourage them to participate and interact. American Psychologist Carl Rogers said that there are three core teacher characteristics that help to create an effective learning environment: respect, empathy, and authenticity.
